A Bitter Drink, Indeed

I enjoy studying the gospels because I find that no matter how many times you’ve been through them, there’s still a wealth of details you’ve never approached before. Here’s one:

Has it ever occurred to you to wonder what sort of stick and sponge the soldiers offered Jesus wine or vinegar with while he was on the cross? Have you ever wondered if this was an act of mercy or an act of mockery as the context in Luke suggests?

Here’s pastor Mark from Mars Hill in Seattle giving a pretty weighty explanation of what really went down here. When he starts with “He said that…” I believe he’s referring to a tour guide while he was in Israel.

To be fair, I’ve been searching for about 30 minutes now and can’t find anyone else online who’s supporting this statement, but nothing to contradict it either. I’m a dedicated listener and reader of Mark’s work, and I trust that he’s done his research here. If you come across any information regarding this, shoot me a link!
